ICYC and ICUC (Joint) Workshop & Networking Meeting on Youth & Co-operatives in Educational Institutions

Session Outline

The workshop and Networking Meeting is being organized to promote a dialogue across members, experts and other stakeholders on the issue of Youth inclusion in the co-operative sector, as well as to network co-operative organizations active in youth-related cooperative development at the national and international level. The meeting and workshop are themed on Building Resilience & Sustainability through the Fifth Co-operative Principle on Education, Information & Training, and participants are expected to learn & share about concerns like the inclusion of cooperatives in curriculums at school & university; collecting & developing tools that can help youth create co-operatives in Asia and Pacific.

Speaker Bios

Mr. Ahsan Ali Thakur is the chairperson of the ICYC

Ahsan is the chairperson of the ICA-AP Committee on Youth Cooperation. He hails from the Karachi Co-operative Housing Societies Union, Pakistan that he joined in 2007. He holds dual master’s degrees in MBA (HR and Project Management). He also serves as a motivational speaker and trainer for development projects in Pakistan. He serves on the ICA-AP board as a youth representative and the ICA Youth Network as its Vice President.

Dr. Mohd. Azlan Yahya is the Chairperson of the ICUC

Dr. Azlan is the chairperson of the ICA-AP Committee on University/Campus Co-operatives and serves the Angkasa Malaysia as it Vice President, Finance & Integrity. He graduated from the UUM College of Business and is an expert in the field of education, management accounting, and public sector accounting. He has previously served as Statistics Assistant, Statistic Department Malaysia. He has received the prestigious Royal Education Award from the Universiti Utara Malaysia in 1994 and the Civil Service Innovative Award, MAMPU 2007. He holds a Ph.D. in Business Administration from the Universiti, Utara Malaysia.


Dr. Yashvantha Dongre is the Member co-secretary of the ICUC

Dr. Dongre started his career in 1982 at Mangalore University and is currently serving as Director, Planning Monitoring and Evaluation Board at the University of Mysore. He served as Director at Post Graduate Centre, Hassan; Registrar at Vijayanagara Srikrishnadevaraya University, Bellary, Dean of Commerce and Acting Vice-Chancellor at the University of Mysore. He also served as a Consultant to the High-Powered Committee on Co-operatives set up by the Indian Ministry of Agriculture, the recommendations of which led to the 97th Constitutional Amendment in 2012. He is also serving as the Co-Secretary of ICA Committee on Campus Co-operatives in Asia and Pacific and Co-convener of Asia Pacific Co-operative Research Partnership.

Ms. Anahita Eslahpazir is a Board member and the CEO of Rah-e-Roshd

Anahita is a cooperative activist with a distinct focus on (women) social development issues. Receiving mutual support from her like-hearted fellow cooperators, she has managed to put Rah-e-Roshd in the perspective of a genuine coop with social missions. She is from Tehran and as a Rah-e-Roshd member has been working in the CEO capacity since 2010. She holds a BS in Mathematics and an MS in MBA from Tehran's Sharif University of Technology. Anahita's inner calling for leading a materially and spiritually balanced life introduced her to the cooperative form of business. Having practically experienced the enormous significance of cooperative philosophy and values, she has gained faith in cooperatives as development hubs and hence in the necessity of correctly promoting them.


Ms. Diana Dovgan is the Secretary-General of CICOP 2018.

Ms. Diana Dovgan is the Secretary-General of CICOPA (International Organization of Industrial and Service Co-operative) since 2018. She has previously served CECOP  and CICOPA as Policy Officer since in 2008. Prior to that, she worked as an advisor for the Belgian Minister of Social integration, Equal opportunities, and Public service.

Mr. Alireza Banaefiar is Manager of International Affairs at the ICC,

Iran Alireza has served as the International Affairs Manager of Iran Chamber of Cooperatives (ICC) since 2016. He is also a member of the ICA-AP Committee on Youth Cooperation and holds a master's degree in Business Administration at Istanbul University in Turkey. At his work at the ICC, Alireza has succeeded in organizing business delegations to/ from other countries and is currently the head of the 13th ICA-AP Regional assembly organizing a team.


Ms. Bo Young OH is master’s student of co-operatives management at Sungkonghoe University.

Bo Young OH is a researcher on cooperatives and other forms of ethical enterprises and is interested in extending her field of research in social and solidarity economy, community and gender. She is also a member of CooPY, researcher co-operatives made up of students and professors of co-operative management of Sungkonghoe University. She is currently working on publication and translation of the researches of Korean consumer co-operatives.

Mr. Sanjay Kumar Verma is Deputy Director at the NCUI, India

Sanjay Kumar Verma heads the Publications, PR, and Coop Connect divisions in National Cooperative Union of India. He has an MPhil in International Relations from Jawaharlal University India more than 100 publications to his credit in national and international journals besides leading dailies of India. Presently a member of ICA-AP Research Committee, he has been an active presenter at ICA-AP Research Conferences held at various places since 2004. He was also associated with New Harmony Press, UK for a long time which published International Journal of Cooperative Management, and is playing an important role in popularizing cooperative education programmes in the schools through taking timely initiatives in organizing training programmes for children, school teachers and Principals of schools in collaboration with Kendriya Vidyalaya schools, government schools, Navodaya schools,etc.

Dr.Asanka Thilakarathna is a Board Member of the Co-operative Youth Empowerment Society

Mr. Balasubramanian Iyer is the Regional Director for the International Co-operative Alliance Asia-Pacific. 

Balu brings strong management and operational credentials in strategic planning, budgeting, performance assessment, compliance, and audit. He has worked with the Asia Foundation, the International Development Exchange, ActionAid India, and the Aga Khan Rural Support Program; and served as Adjunct Faculty at Southern New Hampshire University.  He holds a degree in Civil Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Durgapur, India; a Post Graduate Diploma in Rural Management from the Institute of Rural Management at Anand, India; and master’s in public policy from the Goldman School of Public Policy, University of California, Berkeley.
